How do scientists steer satellites and remotely probe our planet’s surface? Researchers from HSE and other universities discussed questions such as this with students from 36 participating Moscow high schools as part of the city government’s Moscow School IT-Classes project. Eight educational partners, including HSE and Bauman Moscow State Technical University, are participating in the project, which aims to familiarize students with careers in IT.

The Innovation Workshop that opened at MIEM HSE has everything you might need to create an engineering project: from numerically controlled machines to a soldering station. Creativity is more than welcome at this lab. The heads of the workshop, Sergey Belanov and Alexander Semion, gave HSE News Services a guided tour of the lab.
The best features of the university model created by HSE over the years will be preserved, but a new model is essential for further development. This new model will focus on project-based learning for all students, as well as the digital transformation in the field of education.
HSE MIEM Professor Alexander Varnavsky has developed a chatbot to increase the success of implementing a ‘Flipped Classroom’ approach in his teaching. He presented the bot at the International Conference-Competition of Innovative Educational Technology held at Moscow State University, where it took first place in the ‘Information and Pedagogical Technology’ category.
More than 40,000 participants from 183 countries have already registered for the Open Doors Scholarship Competition. The competition, which is held by the Association of Global Universities, gives international applicants the opportunity to enroll tuition-free in a Master’s programme of a participating Russian university of their choice without having to take entrance exams. The deadline to submit your portfolio for consideration is December 18.
On November 27, the HSE University held its 18th annual Golden HSE Award Ceremony in honour of colleagues who have demonstrated excellence in research or have contributed in a meaningful way to the HSE community. The special occasion coincided with the university’s 27th anniversary.
The smart blanket was presented at Sirius Scientific and Technological University in Sochi and awarded first place at a physical sciences hackathon. Over the course of one day, 15 student teams had to choose a topic, study the market, develop a concept, and present a prototype of their electronic device.
HSE University has once again placed in two subject rankings of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings: Computer Science (in the top 400) and Engineering and Technology (in the 601-800 range).
This July, St. Petersburg and Moscow hosted Geek Picnic, the popular science festival for lovers of science and cutting-edge technology. This year HSE University became an official partner of the event. Festival guests got to see the recent projects of HSE professors, students, and graduates as well as attend lectures by leading HSE experts.
