It has been more than two months since HSE and VK launched a new collaborative educational project: the Engineering and Mathematics School (EMS) based at HSE MIEM. Competitive enrolment was announced in Moscow for HSE students wishing to enter EMS. Those who were admitted are now working at EMS workshops on actual business assignments from VK covering the most in-demand areas of IT, while also attending signature courses led by HSE and VK experts. Two teams including students from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and the Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics, are the best in Russia in practical cybersecurity in the framework of the Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions. The main purpose of this type of competition is the exchange of experience and knowledge in the field of information security, professional growth and the development of programming and system design culture among students and young scientists involved in cybersecurity.

Professor Lev Shchur has received the Henri Abraham Award 2022 for his services in organising science, including conducting international conferences and supporting early-career scientists. The award was established by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) in 2020, and has since been given to six researchers from various countries.

On August 9, a Soyuz 2.1b rocket launched with a payload of HSE University’s second satellite, which will monitor the land surface of the Arctic region. HSE Researchers Develop New Method for Analysing Genetic Admixture of Populations
Researchers of the HSE International Laboratory of Statistical and Computational Genomics together with their international colleagues have proposed a new statistical method for analysing population admixture that makes it possible to determine the time and number of migration waves more accurately. The history of Colombians and Mexicans (descendants of Native Americans, Spaniards and Africans) features two episodes of admixture that occurred about 350 and 200 years ago for Mexicans and 400 and 100 years ago for Colombians. The results were published in the Plos Genetics journal.
