Explaining how robots work by means of a video game; teaching children to count by means of a smartphone; and teaching a mechanical prosthesis to ‘think’ by means of processing brain signals – these tasks are very different in technical terms. But all three have been solved by HSE students as part of their engineering projects and have helped to improve lives.

Artur Davletshin, fourth-year student in Informatics and Computer Hardware and Software at MIEM HSE (supervisor Aleksandr Romanov, Associate Professor at the School of Computer Engineering) has won a scholarship for the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Artur will attend the WWDC in San Jose, California, from June 4 – 8.
On February 8, the winners of the UMNIK competition were announced. The programme, run by the Small S&T Enterprises Assistance Fund, promotes young researchers’ innovation projects. Two HSE students and one HSE alumna will receive grants of 500,000 rubles to carry out research and further develop their S&T projects.
The application period for HSE’s Student Research Paper Competition has started. The winners will have an opportunity to take part in workshops on academic skills development, while those in state-financed studies will improve their chances of seeing their academic scholarships increased. Also, in addition in HSE students, learners from other academic institutions are eligible for this competition.
Each year HSE holds the Student Project Contest, which allows projects deemed important for the development of the university at least and all of society at most to receive financial, organisational, or any other type of support to help them succeed.
