Biologists and mathematicians from HSE University, Skoltech and the RAS Kharkevich Institute have studied the spread of COVID-19 in Russia. The main part of the study was completed in late June, but until October, the team was working with data following the reviewers’ recommendations. The paper was published on January 28, 2021 in the journal Nature Communications. MIEM students spoke about their contribution to the research.

The Armensky Annual Inter-University Research and Technology Conference has concluded at MIEM HSE. Out of 200 submitted papers, 32 works by high school, undergraduate and graduate students participated in the event. The HSE News Service has prepared an overview of four HSE student-led projects that were awarded first-class diplomas.

The smart blanket was presented at Sirius Scientific and Technological University in Sochi and awarded first place at a physical sciences hackathon. Over the course of one day, 15 student teams had to choose a topic, study the market, develop a concept, and present a prototype of their electronic device.

The Russian Science Foundation announced the results of its 2019 competitions for support from the Presidential Research Project Programme. One competition was for grants in support of research initiatives by early career researchers, and another was in support of research conducted by research groups headed by early career scholars.

The regular workshop organized by the International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-scale Analysis presented reports on the modern development of supercomputer technologies, on the HSE supercomputer, and on the results of solving various real problems using atomic modeling.

On Tuesday, May 15, seminar "Supercomputer and Multiscale Modelling of Condensed Phase and Biological Systems" was held. A. Polyansky from IBCh RAS gave a talk "Atomistic mechanism of the constitutive activation of PDGFRA via its transmembrane domain". The result of this study was the molecular model of PDGFRa receptor activation, and the role of its oncogenic mutant form have been revealed. On the second part of the seminar students of SAMMA Laboratory reported on their projects.

This year students from other Russian and international universities competed against HSE students. The new HSE project ‘Scientific Battles’ was also announced at the award ceremony.

Students from universities in Russia and abroad have until October 31^st to submit their applications for HSE’s open competition for research conducted in business informatics, computer science, mathematics, media communications, and political science.
