The School of Applied Mathematics was created in 2015. Our educational programmes focus on the development of control systems and information processing, as well as modern methods of mathematical and computer modeling. The School implements master’s programmes in ‘Information Management’ and ‘Processing Systems in Engineering’.

On October 9-12, 2017 HSE holds 2nd International "Conference on Computer Simulation in Physics and beyond".
Lev Shchur, the conference organizer, Professor at HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM HSE), spoke about the event and its programme.
'Local participants typically make up half of all participants, and the level of the conference depends on the level of their research. The level of research at HSE Moscow allows us to hold conferences at an international level,' says Lev Shchur.
The scientific level of presentations by the keynote speakers is another important factor in the success of a conference.
'The conference programme and organizing committees worked carefully on the pool of invited speakers. We hope that this year the conference's success is already assured by the renowned participants from around the world who have agreed to make plenary reports,' said the conference Chairman.
‘The conference programme reflects modern trends in the development of computer simulation, says Lev Shchur. For example, the report by Professor Ruiqin Zhang from the University of Hong Kong will be dedicated to the recent progress in attosecond technology and to the modeling of the tunneling lifetime of an electron escaping from some small atoms under the influence of electric field.
Professor Jonathan Machta (University of Massachusetts, Boston) will present a report on his study of complex systems using population annealing, the computer modelling technique developed by the researcher.
Professor Wolfhard Jahnke (University of Leipzig) will talk about the details of a new simulation method to study temperature-driven droplet formation that allows a shape-free determination of free-energy barriers and its application in the study of polymer physics.
Erik Luijten, Professor North-West University, Chicago, will speak on self-organization in colloidal solutions.
Oleg Vasilyev (Professor at the Center for Design, Manufacturing and Materials at Skoltech) will talk about turbulence modeling. Most of the reports are dedicated to studies on the intersection of different fields of science, known as interdisciplinary research.
Our students and lecturers are familiar with the name of Professor Ralph Kenna (Coventry University, England), who conducted a series of lectures at MIEM last autumn and who is studying social networks of the Irish sagas in terms of statistical physics models.
I would pay special attention to the report by Riccardo Zecchina (Professor at Bocconi University, Italy), which is dedicated to spin glasses and the extraction of new knowledge from data about them. Bocconi University in Italy is like HSE in Russia. I look forward to learn about new research by my colleague, theoretical physicist, who this year started working at that university, says Lev Shchur.
