MIEM Delegation Visits Brazil

On March 31 - April 5, the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in Recife, Brazil, organized a BRIC-UFPE Scientific Workshop to discuss the recent scientific trends and projects, to strengthen cooperation between four BRIC countries, and promote collaboration.

The event brought together representatives of scientific institutions and universities from Brazil, India, Russia, and China.  Russian delegation was represented by two institutions: HSE MIEM and MEPHI. MIEM delegation comprised Deputy Director for Research Professor Sergey AksenovProfessor Konstantin Arutyunov, and Professor Andrey Vasenko.

The conference focused on the fields of photonics, pharmaceutical innovation, software engineering nanomaterials, and nanoelectronics. The opening plenary session started with the welcoming speech by the UFPE Rector Prof. Anísio Brasileiro de Freitas Dourado and short presentations by each participating institution.

Conference working discussions covered different topics, from description of laboratories to promotion of the results, and ended up with the discussions of potential projects within the framework of the recently launched BRICS call for proposal.

Professor Arutyunov reported on the current problems of quantum nanoelectronics and presented Quantum Nanoelectronics research lab (QNE). Professor Aksenov made a presentation about current research and teaching at MIEM. Finally, Professor Vasenko spoke about the main research areas of international cooperation of the QNE laboratory and, in particular, about cooperation with the Federal University of Pernambuco.

QNE laboratory has been cooperating with the group of Professor Arkady Shanenko from the Federal University of Pernambuco since 2017. Cooperation involves joint research, seminars and postdoc mobility. In particular, in May 2018 Professor Shanenko visited MIEM and conducted a few research seminars and lectures for students of the School of Electronic Engineering. He also deliveted a course of six lectures on the fundamentals of quantum theory for senior students. In 2019, Professor Shanenko was awarded an HSE grant to support his second visit to HSE MIEM in the autumn of 2019.

Within the framework of international scientific cooperation with Professor Shanenko and his group, HSE MIEM has welcomed the first postdoc from Brazil. Dr. Wilmer Yesid Cordoba Camacho has come to Russia to continue his research career after earning his doctorate degree in UFPE under the supervision of Professor Albino Aguiar and Arkady Shanenko. To come to HSE, Dr.Cordoba went through HSE's highly competitive international recruitment process. His contract has been extended for 2019 on the strength of his research results. Currently he is working as a postdoc at the MIEM School of Electronic Engeneering.

The Delegation of HSE MIEM also had a productive meeting with the Rector of the Federal University of Pernambuco Professor Anísio Brasileiro de Freitas Dourado to discuss further collaboration. In the future, collaboration between UFPE and HSE MIEM, the QNE laboratory, in particular is set to expand to include student exchange, further research visits, joint participation in various competitions for scientific grants, and other initiatives. To this effect, HSE MIEM and UFPE have signed a cooperation agreement which would facilitate their further actions.

The delegation of HSE MIEM thanks Professor Anderson S.I. Gomes, the Head of UFPE Organizing Committee for the excellent organization of the conference, and Professor Lioudmila Batourina for the professional support provided for the event and the warm welcome of the Russian delegation from HSE and MEPHI.
