Development of an emergency prevention system for 3D printing

3D printers are increasingly used in the modern world and find their application in almost all areas of life. With their help, you can reduce the cost of manufacturing parts, thanks to the materials and technologies used.

During printing, many abnormal situations can occur (filament breakage, extruder clogging, part separation from the table, etc.). Late detection of a problem can lead not only to the loss of material, but also to damage to expensive printer parts.

We are working on this project to resolve this issue. The main tasks are the development of software for detecting emergencies and the creation of a warning system about a problem that has arisen. Thanks to this, we will be able to avoid unnecessary costs for printer repair and additional purchase of filament.

Objective of the project:

Develop software and hardware to prevent accidents when working with a 3D printer using image processing from portable cameras installed in a special way on the printer and using sensors.
Also, during operation, a situation periodically arises when the material necessary for printing runs out, which in itself is not a critical failure, but can lead to the fact that the part will be damaged - then you will need to print it again; For the purpose, our team also has the

Application:

Installing this system on a 3D printer will allow timely detection of errors, which will save the printing material and the time of the printer operator. Given that the speed of 3D printers ranges from 30 to 150 mm/sec, it will take three to eleven hours to produce a small model of medium complexity. This system will allow you to detect an error that occurred during printing, and thereby reduce the amount of unproductive work and extend the performance of the printer, because a breakdown can affect not only the geometry of the model, but also break the printer.
At the moment, the system is installed on a local 3D printer for debugging and simplified hardware interaction with it. In the future, methods can be developed and implemented to install the system on a wider coverage of 3D printers.

Development stage:

So far, a set of possible errors has been studied and classified. A list of potential solutions was also developed for each of the problems identified. The principle of operation of a 3D printer, the file format in which models are stored, and ways of exchanging information between the printer and the operator's application were studied. At the current stage of development, the system should be able to detect the part coming off the table and the end of the filament at the printer.
